Robotics-assisted knee surgery gets you back to doing what you love

Dr. Edward Eissmann and Dr. Paul Naumann have added a robotics-assisted knee surgery platform to their Orthopedic Program. It adds an extra layer of pre-surgical planning and improved precision for partial and total knee replacement procedures.

Knee replacement surgery is unique, based on individual knee anatomy and the implant used. Robotics offers two essential benefits for people undergoing a knee replacement procedure. First, it helps the surgeon create a highly individualized plan specific to the unique shape and motion of the patient’s knee. This allows the surgeon to determine the correct size and position of the implant, which is critical to knee alignment and stability. The second benefit is the robotic assistance to physically remove only the damaged bone, preparing the site for the prosthesis before placing and adjusting the partial knee implant.

The addition of robotics enables Drs. Eissmann and Naumann to now perform partial knee replacement surgery. In a partial knee replacement, the supporting tissue and ligaments that help stabilize the knee are spared, and only the damaged portion of the knee is replaced. Healthy cartilage and bone remain intact to support the knee joint to move smoothly with the prosthetic implant. Patients undergoing partial knee replacement often report a ‘more normal’ knee, less pain and quicker rehabilitation.

The number one goal is to get patients back to the activities they love.

In a total knee replacement, the entire knee joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant designed to replicate your natural knee joint’s shape, motion, and stability. Total knee replacement is one of the most common procedures in all of medicine, with over 600,000 performed in the U.S. annually. Ninety percent of people who receive a total knee replacement experience a dramatic decrease in knee pain and an improvement in their ability to perform daily activities.

Drs. Eissmann and Naumann are thrilled to bring this new technology to the already great orthopedic program they have built.  In doing so, they aim to address the needs of their patients by providing the highest level of orthopedic care on the peninsula.
