Whether it’s hiking, biking, or kayaking, Dr. Caitlin Lund loves being outdoors. It’s perhaps not surprising, then, that she chose to come to Jefferson Healthcare in December 2023 to serve as one of the hospital’s six general surgeons. Lund enjoys living in East Jefferson County for many of the reasons we all do. “The outdoor recreation opportunities are endless and the small-town feel is great,” she says. Lund explains that she, her husband, and their dog have made the most of the opportunity to live in Port Townsend. “We love to support local businesses and find new ways to explore the outdoors,” she says.
But it’s not just the love of the outdoors and Port Townsend’s small-town charm that draws Lund to Jefferson Healthcare. “I chose to come to Jefferson because the surgical team is supportive of one another and work together to take care of the community’s surgical needs,” she says. “I consider myself lucky to have found an excellent work environment doing the job I love, and it just so happens to be in the perfect location.”
Dr. Lund brings a wealth of expertise to East Jefferson County, offering a broad range of surgical procedures tailored to meet the needs of our community. “I perform both upper and lower endoscopy, breast cancer surgery, hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, colon and small bowel surgery, vascular port placement, and emergency general surgeries such as appendix removal, gallbladder issues, and small bowel obstruction,” Dr. Lund explains. “I have a keen interest in minimally invasive surgery to assist patients in faster recovery.”
The emphasis on minimally invasive techniques is a key component of Dr. Lund’s approach to patient care. These advanced procedures often result in shorter hospital stays, less postoperative pain, and quicker recoveries—which means patients can get home, and back into their normal routines, sooner.
For many rural Americans, living far from city centers means it’s difficult to get access to high-quality healthcare. Research suggests that if accessing care means a long drive, many patients simply won’t go to the doctor, leading to worse health outcomes.
Dr. Lund and Jefferson Healthcare work hard to provide comprehensive care right here at home. This means for many patients, there’s no need to cross the bridge. “Cancer screening, such as colonoscopy, makes up a large portion of our surgical volume because it is so important to our community as a way to detect and even prevent colon cancer,” shares Lund. “As we continue to seek improvements and expand services, we are always trying to keep in mind what our community’s needs are. I hear repeatedly from patients that they prefer not to travel to the city for their healthcare, so the more we can offer services here at Jefferson, the more likely we are to keep our patients satisfied.”
