At Jefferson Healthcare, we understand that a visit to the Emergency Department can be tremendously stressful. If you do have an emergency, we are here for you—ready to provide advanced emergency care right here in Jefferson County. 

Seek emergency careor call 911—immediately if you think someone could suffer significant harm or die without prompt care. Examples of emergency situations include: 
  • Is the situation life-threatening?
  • Could the situation worsen and become life-threatening during a drive to the Emergency Department?
  • Do you need special equipment or skills to move the person?
  • Could traffic or distance cause a delay in getting to the Emergency Department?
Go to the Emergency Department if any of the following occur:
  • Signs of a heart attack or stroke: Sudden onset of chest pain without trauma, shortness of breath, arm numbness, toothache, jaw or neck pain
  • Signs of a stroke: sudden dizziness, weakness, change in vision, slurred speech
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Bleeding that will not stop after 10 minutes of direct pressure
  • Poisoning
  • Orthopedic Injuries
  • Major injuries like a head injury
  • Coughing up or vomiting blood
  • Homicidal or suicidal feelings
  • Major burns 
  • Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea  
  • Sudden or severe pain 
Express Clinic is available for conditions that require attention but do not pose an immediate, serious threat to your health or life, such as: 
  • Allergies 
  • Back pain 
  • Cold or flu symptoms 
  • Cough or bronchitis 
  • Earache 
  • Minor burns or bruises 
  • Rash, poison ivy, allergic reaction 
  • Rising temperature 
  • Scrape or cut 
  • Sore throat 
  • Sprain

Jefferson Healthcare Emergency Department is staffed 24/7 with highly trained physicians, registered nurses, and Emergency Department technicians. We are prepared to care for any emergencies from multi-system trauma to complex medical problems.

All of our Emergency Department physicians are board certified in family medicine or emergency medicine; registered nurses are trained in triage and certified in advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, and trauma care; and technicians are certified emergency medical technicians and have completed extensive Emergency Department orientation and training.
